There is value in NoFollow links

A huge part of optimizing a website is building links back to the site from other sites. There’s a lot more to it than just building links, but we’ll touch on that in a later post.

Most of the information you find on building links back to your site tells you to build DoFollow links and that NoFollow links have no value or pass no link value to your site. It’s just an opinion of mine, but I think NoFollow links have value and that they’re an important part of building links back to your site. Here are a few reasons why:

NoFollow links are still links to your site that potential website guests can use to access your site

NoFollow links are crucial if you are trying to tell Google and other search engines that your site’s link portfolio is natural

NoFollow links provide more opportunities for spiders to access content throughout your site

NoFollow links can help get your site’s content indexed by Yahoo

Ask.com doesn’t use the attribute

I think that NoFollow links have several benefits and I build them often. If anything they’re a great way to pad your link portfolio and make it look more natural. In addition, if you only read and visit blogs that are “DoFollow” blogs you’re going to miss out on tons of great information.

5 Basics - Little Reminder

Here’s an interesting video from Ecommerce Web Advice starring Garreth Davis - it basically just touches on a few basic things and reminded me to once again check our sites for broken links. I won’t comment on the quality!!! but the content of the video is good and to the point.

Cheap Articles that Are Well Written… What?

http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showt…29#post6560529

I’m not sure how many of you actually need content on a regular basis but I do. I can’t tell you how many writers I get scammed by every week. I rarely get anything worth the time spent reading it and can’t express how frustrating it is to look for a writer every day. The articles written by INEEDCONTENT are very well written, accurately informative, and lacked any major punctuation or grammar errors. For the price, the articles are quite impressive; they were written and delivered within two days.

I ran several portions of the articles through the University of Phoenix’s plagiarism checker and also searched Google for duplicate material but couldn’t find any evidence of content theft. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been sent duplicate content and can’t stress the value and importance of original content.

For only a couple cents per word, articles of 500 words cost only $10 and are an extremely good value considering the quality of work. I’ve paid less for an article and always end up rewriting and restructuring the entire article. I’ve paid a lot more for an article and find myself in the same situation. Other than a few personal preferences dealing with tone, these articles were ready to go.

Here’s a recent thread started by INEEDCONTENT just in case YOUNEEDCONTENT - http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showt…29#post6560529

Free On-site Analysis – JWR Media

http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=699320

JWR Media is offering Digital Point forum members a free onsite analysis of their website. From the looks of it many members took advantage of the service and the thread clearly shows that nearly everyone, if not everyone, is happy with the analysis.

Last evening around, I don’t know, maybe 12 am or something I posted our URL for an analysis just to see what the team over there could come up with… you never know what you’re overlooking until you get an outside view of your site from someone that doesn’t work on it daily.

When I woke up this morning I had already received an email from JWR Media with an analysis of our site – sweet! Unfortunately the team over there didn’t find too many things that we could improve, I guess we can’t find an easy fix and get a quick jump, but they did point out one very valuable tool that we could implement which would help ensure that spiders and users don’t come to a dead end.

I didn’t know about this trick and don’t remember reading about it on forums or in any books. We made several changes yesterday and somehow messed up several links; these messed up links took the user back to our homepage and would have probably caused the user to leave and a spider to stop crawling our site. I’ll post an exact quote from John over at JRW media below so you can read about the problem and solution.

“You should setup a custom 404 Page Not Found page instead of having the homepage displayed. On your custom 404 page, you should have something like. Were you looking for this? Link1 Link2 Link3, etc. and link to the most popular pages of your site. This way if a search engine spider or a visitor tries to go to a page that does not exist, they do not hit a dead end. The robots will continue to index your site by following the links you have on your 404 page. This gives you the ability to point your visitors in the right direction as well. ”

Thanks for the analysis, helping us find these links and sharing this solution with us.

Search Engine and Directory Submissions - $5

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 5:26 pm

http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=700163

This service is another social bookmarking service and seems to focus most of the bookmarks on the more popular social websites – 37 bookmarks in all. The report that we received after the bookmarking was done was the best report for this service that we’ve received so far. It wasn’t much different from other reports as far as information provided, but it looked like an actual official report and can easily be passed on to a client. The service was done within the expected time frame.

In addition to the social bookmarking provided by the seller, we opted to try out their submission to search engines and directories service – yes I know there are services out there that do this absolutely free but we wouldn’t be able to provide a review if we didn’t do it! When I received the report back from the seller I was impressed with the amount of search engines and directories that our site was submitted to – 455 (successful submissions) and 472 total submissions; this exceeds the amount provided by any free service we’ve found so far. This report was also very professional and can easily be passed on to a client. It included the names of each search engine/directory, a breakdown of submissions, and the title, description and URL that was submitted.

If you want to read a post with some of the benefits of social bookmarking the information can be found here – Benefits of Social Bookmarking.

Matt Cutts on What SEOs Should Focus on in 2008

It’s no surprise that Matt hints (maybe a little more than a hint!) that content is still King - touches on Google local services and mobile users.

180 Bookmarks for $29.00

http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=700333

The service is 180 bookmarks on 180 different social websites for $29.00: the service has a 24 hour turnaround. As with any service, the most important part for me is that the provider gets the job done when expected and that the service is what I was told it was going to be. In this case, the seller delivered a report before 24 hours passed with a complete list of 180 social websites. I’ll admit that I haven’t checked to make sure our site was bookmarked on every one of the sites yet but the ones I have checked look good (I’ve checked close to 30 so far). I doubt I’ll ever check all 180 bookmarks because some of the links are hard to find and I’d probably end up wasting an entire day to make sure we’re on every website. Screen shots of our bookmarks would have been easier for us but would have probably driven the price of the service up; I’m more than happy with what I received.

The customer service was great and the bookmarks got done as promised. If you’re not familiar with social websites you’ll want to know that many of the bookmarks that you’ll receive will have a “no follow” tag; you won’t get 180 back links. The good thing about this service is that people using the search engines on many of the social mediums are able to find your website when they search for your keywords. I checked a few and am pleased to say that our site is showing up and in good position for our keywords.

The best thing about this service is that I know over the next year I’ll receive my money’s worth in relevant traffic from the social websites. When using pay per click (PPC) services we average around $2.00/click so if I get just 15 relevant clicks throughout the year I’m good with paying for the bookmarks and any link value passed on to our website is a bonus – for us it’s all about traffic and exposure.

The seller assured me that within 3 weeks we will see results through an increase in SERPs and traffic. I’ll update this post in about 3 weeks.

Advantages

Back links

Traffic

Bookmarks

Low cost

Quick Turn Around

Social media exposure

Disadvantages

Not all links are “do follow”

Not all bookmarks allowed links (I might not have dug deep enough)

If you want to check every bookmark you’ll need to register to some of the sites

Checking the work will take a lot of time

Many of the links are located on low PR pages

3.5 stars - Overall the price is well justified and the seller is great to work with.

PR 9 Link in a Forum – Not So Much

This review is a little late but will hopefully save someone from purchasing a bad service.

http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=695290

Tried this service out for a site just to see what this guy has to offer and to get the details for DP members. I was a little skeptical about the $50 PR9 link but thought it would make a good review, especially if it was a good deal. The seller was extremely fast, polite and still backs his service up 100% but I looked at the finished product and couldn’t find anything that resembled a PR9 or even a PR!

As mentioned, the seller still backs the service up and even went as far as to send me a screen shot of his screen showing a PR9. A+ for customer service if that doesn’t require a happy customer. I tried 4 different PR tools and a few different browsers and can officially say that my tools don’t work or the page is a big fat PR0.

Stars (-1) – Not worth a Penny

If anyone is a happy customer and can let me know some different tools to use I’d be more than happy to re-do this review.

Here’s a link to the thread if you want to ask the seller for some details – he’s a nice guy…I guess

http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=695290 – just checked and the guy was banned -
